Role summary
The Unix/Linux System Administrator is responsible for the installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, security, and performance of Unix/Linux operating systems and supporting infrastructure. The role ensures the availability, reliability, and security of enterprise systems that host critical business applications and databases. The administrator also provides technical support, automates routine tasks, monitors system health, and participates in disaster recovery and capacity planning.
Duties and responsibilities
Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain Unix/Linux operating systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Oracle Linux, Ubuntu etc.). Administer physical and virtual Linux servers. Perform regular system patching and OS upgrades. Manage system start-up, shutdown, and service configuration. Configure and maintain kernel parameters and system tuning. Deploy, configure, and maintain enterprise server infrastructure. Manage file systems, storage allocation, and disk management. Monitor server health and ensure optimal performance. Maintain hardware inventory and server documentation. Create, modify, and manage user accounts and groups. Implement security hardening based on organizational standards. Manage SSH access, Sudo privileges, and password policies. Perform vulnerability remediation and security updates. Monitor security logs and investigate suspicious activities. Monitor CPU, memory, disk, and network utilization. Perform capacity planning and resource forecasting. Tune operating system parameters for optimal performance. Backup & Disaster Recovery Configure and monitor backup processes. Verify backup integrity through regular restoration testing. Participate in disaster recovery planning and execution. Maintain business continuity procedures. Automation & Scripting Develop automation scripts using Shell, Python, or Perl. Automate routine administrative tasks. Maintain scheduled jobs using Cron and system timers. Improve operational efficiency through scripting. Network Administration Support Configure network interfaces, routing, DNS, and firewall settings. Troubleshoot network connectivity issues. Support load balancing and high availability environments. Assist with VPN and secure remote access configuration.
Job requirements
Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field. Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience in Unix/Linux system administration within an enterprise environment. Proven experience installing, configuring, upgrading, and maintaining Linux operating systems (Oracle Linux, Ubuntu). Experience administering physical, virtual, and cloud-based Linux servers. Strong experience with shell scripting (Bash) and automation of routine administrative tasks. Well, understanding of Red Hat System Administrator. Well, understanding Red Hat Engineer. Oracle Linux Implementation Specialist (preferred) VMware Professional (VCP) (preferred) Configuration and communication between two servers (any OS) Great knowledge of operating system. Experience managing users, groups, permissions, authentication services (LDAP/Active Directory), and security policies. Hands-on experience with system monitoring, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and capacity planning. Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform) is an advantage. Experience supporting enterprise applications and databases on Linux platforms. Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking, DNS, SSH, NFS, firewalls, and storage management (LVM, SAN/NAS).
