Role summary
To strengthen inpatient management of Severe Acute Malnutrition in Helmand Province through the deployment of qualified clinical and nutrition staff in newly established Therapeutic Feeding Units
Duties and responsibilities
TASK TO BE PERFORMED: · Admission of SAM children with medical complications in TFU · Carry out the daily rounds in the assigned ward. Conduct regular ward round, prioritize the emergency, take a comprehensive history, and clinical examination, medical and nutritional prescription · Clinical examination of patients daily to determine any change in their clinical status. · Carry out any appropriate and available investigations that may support the diagnosis of disease. · Prescribe medications and therapeutic milk according to patients’ diagnosis, age, and weight, and be aware of possible drug interactions. · Ensure timely consultation and/or referral for complex medical cases which require higher medical support. · Ensure that the protocols are strictly followed and implemented. · Provide technical training to the team on management of severe malnutrition with complication. · Ensure implementation of the activities linked to care practices. · Collect and cross check weekly statistics data and analyze the reports. · Document the admission and discharge diagnosis for each patient according to national statistical definitions to enable good. · Write prescriptions clearly and neatly on health card or prescription chart. · Properly fill TFU patient charts and tally sheets at the end of each day. · Ensure any investigations carried out are clearly marked on the health cards or admission charts Note: Monthly targets will be used as a reference for performance of MD DELIVERABLE(s): · All detected SAM children are admitted in IPD-SAM/OPD SAM program and properly managed as per standard IMAM guideline. · Number of SAM children admitted in IPD-SAM program and properly treated. · All eligible children are provided with Vitamin A supplementation. · Number of children provided Vitamin A supplementation. · Quality monthly progress reports aligned to the standard reporting format is submitted in time. · Number of admissions (SAM with medical complication, children<5 in TFU. · Performance indicators of TFUs. Data record updated (registers) and monthly report timely shared
Job requirements
QUALIFICATIONS: · Female Medical Doctor (MD) degree from a recognized university and registered with the Afghanistan Medical Council (AMC). · Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in pediatrics, inpatient care, or hospital settings; previous experience in a Therapeutic Feeding Unit (TFU), Stabilization Center (SC), or nutrition program is strongly preferred. · Strong knowledge and practical experience in the management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) with medical complications, Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), pediatric emergencies, and MoPH/WHO treatment protocols. · Ability to assess, diagnose, treat, and monitor pediatric patients, provide inpatient care, manage referrals, and maintain accurate medical records and reports. Fluency in Pashto and/or Dari is mandatory; strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with children, caregivers, and multidisciplinary health and nutrition teams
