Role summary
The Nutrition Nurse is responsible for providing quality nutrition and basic healthcare services to vulnerable children, pregnant women, lactating women, and other beneficiaries under the health and nutrition programme. The position supports the prevention, identification, and management of malnutrition through nutrition screening, assessment, counselling, treatment, follow-up, and referral services in accordance with Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) guidelines, Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) protocols, and organizational standards.
Duties and responsibilities
· Provide quality nutrition and basic nursing services to children under five years of age, pregnant women, lactating women, and other vulnerable beneficiaries according to Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) guidelines and organizational protocols. · Conduct nutrition screening of children under five years and pregnant/lactating women using appropriate tools, including MUAC measurement, weight, height/length, and assessment of nutritional status. · Identify, assess, and manage acute malnutrition cases according to Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) protocols, including referral of complicated cases. · Support the implementation of outpatient management of acute malnutrition (OPD-SAM) and supplementary nutrition services where applicable. · Monitor the progress of malnourished children through regular follow-up visits and ensure adherence to treatment plans. · Provide nutrition counselling to mothers, caregivers, and communities on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), breastfeeding, complementary feeding, maternal nutrition, hygiene, and childcare practices. · Conduct individual and group nutrition education sessions, mother support groups, and behaviour change communication activities. · Support the identification and referral of pregnant and lactating women requiring additional nutrition support or health services. · Provide basic nursing care, health education, and support for common childhood illnesses in coordination with the Medical Doctor and health facility team. · Ensure proper distribution, recording, and monitoring of nutrition commodities, including RUTF, RUSF, micronutrients, and other nutrition supplies. · Maintain accurate nutrition registers, patient records, screening forms, referral documents, and HMIS/DHIS2 reporting. · Monitor nutrition commodity consumption, stock levels, expiry dates, and storage conditions according to FEFO/FIFO principles. · Collaborate with Medical Doctors, Midwives, Nutrition Counsellors, Pharmacists, Community Health Workers, and other project staff to provide integrated health and nutrition services. · Participate in community outreach activities, nutrition screening campaigns, home visits, and awareness sessions to improve access to nutrition services. · Promote infection prevention and control (IPC) practices and maintain a safe, clean, and child-friendly service environment. · Participate in supportive supervision, nutrition assessments, data quality checks, and quality improvement activities. · Identify protection concerns and ensure appropriate referral of vulnerable beneficiaries according to organizational safeguarding and referral procedures. · Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly nutrition activity reports and contribute to programme monitoring and donor reporting requirements. · Maintain confidentiality, respect beneficiary dignity, and adhere to professional ethics and humanitarian principles. Perform any other duties assigned by the Health and Nutrition Officer, Nutrition Coordinator, or Project Manager relevant to the position.

PERSON SPECIFICATION It is essential that the post holder shows a good understanding and sympathy with Islamic values and principles as well as commitment to Islamic Relief Worldwide vision, mission and Protection as well as PSEA. Essential: Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications (Bullet Points) Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution Valid nursing license/registration from the relevant national authority. Minimum of 2–3 years of relevant experience in nursing and nutrition services, preferably in humanitarian, primary healthcare, or NGO settings. Good knowledge of Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) protocols, including management of SAM and MAM cases. Sound knowledge of Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), maternal nutrition, breastfeeding promotion, and nutrition counselling techniques. Strong clinical nursing skills, including patient assessment, basic treatment, health education, and referral management. Knowledge of nutrition screening methods, including MUAC measurement, weight and height assessment, growth monitoring, and identification of malnutrition cases. Understanding of Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) nutrition guidelines, BPHS standards, and humanitarian nutrition approaches. Knowledge of nutrition commodities management, including RUTF, RUSF, micronutrients, therapeutic milk, and related supplies. Ability to provide effective counselling and behaviour change communication (BCC) to mothers, caregivers, and communities. Good understanding of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), patient safety, and quality improvement practices. Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills with the ability to work with vulnerable communities. Good documentation, reporting, and data management skills, including familiarity with HMIS/DHIS2 reporting. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Fluency in written and spoken Pashto, Dari, and English. Ability and willingness to travel frequently to field locations, including remote and underserved areas. Commitment to professional ethics, confidentiality, safeguarding, humanitarian principles, and accountability to affected populations (AAP). Proven experience in screening, assessment, and management of acute malnutrition among children under five years of age and pregnant and lactating women (PLW). Demonstrated experience in implementing Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) services, including identification, treatment, follow-up, and referral of SAM and MAM cases. Experience conducting nutrition assessments, including MUAC measurement, weight and height/length assessment, growth monitoring, and nutritional status evaluation. Experience providing Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) counselling, maternal nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and complementary feeding guidance. Experience delivering individual and group nutrition education sessions, mother support groups, and behaviour change communication (BCC) activities. Experience providing basic nursing care, health education, patient monitoring, and referral support for vulnerable beneficiaries. Experience managing and monitoring nutrition commodities, including RUTF, RUSF, micronutrients, therapeutic milk, and other nutrition supplies. Experience maintaining accurate nutrition records, registers, patient files, referral forms, and HMIS/DHIS2 reports. Experience working closely with Medical Doctors, Midwives, Nutrition Counsellors, Pharmacists, Community Health Workers (CHWs), and other health and nutrition team members. Experience conducting community outreach, nutrition screening campaigns, home visits, and awareness activities. Experience implementing Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures and maintaining quality standards in nutrition service delivery. Experience participating in supportive supervision, data quality assessments, nutrition monitoring, and programme improvement activities. Experience working in emergency, conflict-affected, or resource-limited settings with vulnerable communities is highly desirable. Experience preparing activity reports, contributing to programme documentation, and supporting donor reporting requirements.
