Role summary
The WASH Expert – Consultant will be responsible for providing specialized technical guidance and strategic advice on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) issues throughout project development and implementation. This role requires deep expertise in WASH engineering, water resource management, and sustainable infrastructure development, along with strong coordination and analytical skills. The expert will serve as a key technical resource, ensuring that WASH interventions incorporate best practices, climate resilience, and community needs. They will collaborate closely with project teams, local stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to promote sustainable water and sanitation services. The WASH Expert will also conduct specialized assessments of climate-related risks such as drought and flood probabilities, develop design guidelines for each site, utilize climate-resilient engineering practices in constructing and reconstructing water sources, and analyze groundwater recharge data to ensure the sustainability of infrastructure and water supply systems.
Duties and responsibilities
· Conduct specialized assessment of climate risks (such as the probability of drought and flood risks) and provide specific design guidelines for each site individually to ensure climate resilience. · Utilize climate-resilient engineering practices in constructing and reconstructing wells, springs, sources, and new water supply networks to enhance sustainability and durability. · Analyze data and information related to groundwater recharge to inform infrastructure design and ensure the long-term sustainability of water sources. · Develop and update technical standards, guidelines, and SOPs for WASH infrastructure projects, integrating climate resilience and environmental considerations. · Provide technical oversight during the planning, design, and construction phases of WASH infrastructure, ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and environmental standards. · Support community engagement and capacity-building activities, including training on sustainable water management and hygiene practices. · Monitor and evaluate the performance of WASH facilities, prepare progress and technical reports, and recommend corrective actions as needed. · Collaborate with local authorities, stakeholders, and project teams to promote best practices, ensure compliance with policies, and facilitate the integration of climate-resilient approaches in all project activities. · Any other tasks assigned to him by senior management.
Job requirements
1. Education · Bachelor’s degree in Water Resources Engineering, Water Resources Management, and Environmental science or related fields. · Master’s degree is an advantage. 2. Work Experience · A minimum of 7 years of Consultation experience in Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Science, Water Resources Management, or related fields. · Proven expertise in community-based WASH programming and infrastructure development. · Strong knowledge of national policies, standards, and international guidelines related to WASH. 3. Soft Skills · Excellent communication and negotiation skills in both English and local languages (Dari/Pashto). · Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. · Ability to work effectively with government agencies, donors, contractors, and communities. · High level of integrity, accountability, and commitment to quality and safety.
