Role summary
Plan, organize, and evaluate the activities concerning nursing and the team associated, according to MSF values, policies and protocols and universal health standards, in order to warrant the quality and continuity of the health care and the development of the plan of action.
Duties and responsibilities
• Carry out the functions and tasks associated to nursing i.e. perform as a nurse or anesthetist, whenever required or needed, in order to optimize the resources, contributing with his/her knowledge and experience. • Implement all the protocols and hygiene procedures, and supervise his/her team follow the same standards, in order to warrant the quality of the care and service in his/her speciality. • Organize and coordinate the activities of his/her team (week’s schedule, annual leave, absences, etc.), evaluate their performance and define and ensure the needs for training of staff, in order to ensure the coverage of the human resources needs and maintain high standards of quality. • Carry out and/or supervise the ( decentralized) pharmacy and medical equipment management (drugs orders, follow-up of the stock, storage conditions, inventories, follow-up of expired drugs and their destruction, drugs consumption, etc.)in his or her department, in order to satisfy the needs of material with efficiency and effectiveness. • Ensuring that all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Ensuring that cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to the protocols. Reporting any malfunction to the project biomedical service. • Carry-out and/or coordinate administrative (exit-paper, transfer-paper, etc.), information and data collection (patient files, forms, statistics, etc.) tasks, and elaborate regular reporting, in order to have updated and reliable information about the day-to-day activity in the project, output/ outcome and support decision-taking. • Give feedback/ reports to medical focal point. MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities General § Supervise and monitor implementation of MSF NursingGuidelines and SOPs including wound care protocol to all Nurses and Nurse assistants § Ensure quality of care and continuity of care provided 24/7, including proper handover of patients between shifts. § Involve in daily rounding of patients with relevant teams. § Provide support to Head Nurse in idnetifying the needs of the nursing department and deliver formal training on a regular basis. § Provide bedside training on a daily basis. § Ensure that shift handovers are properly done – all documentation should be complete. Clinical Supervision and Quality of care. § Support nurses and clinical team to ensure sustainace of rapid-response to acute emergencies (acute massive transfusions, traumatic chest interventions, surgical shock management and stabilization of patients. § Ensure systematic evaluation (vitals monitoring, interpretation and prompt response) of patients by nurses and timely escalation of care to prevent progression of deterioration of patients. § Conduct regular audit on nursing intervention and develop action plans with support from the nuring management in other to continuously improve on the quality of nursing care. § Folllow-up on strict measures to ensure patient safety and report in a timely manner any patient safety incident. § Routine follow-up with nurses to ensure medication saftey, to minimize potential events leading to over/under dose. § Collaborate with the burn IMS in ensuring proper follow-up of burn patients including good nutrition, fluid resuscitation and hygiene of burn patients are enhanced. Infection Prevention and Control § Ensure and monitor that Infection Prevention and Control protocols and guidelines are followed and observed in the ICU to prevent HAIs and cross contamination. § Ensure preventative maintenance of Medical and Biomedical Equipment is carried out – cleaning and disinfection by nurses and nurse aides – and report malfunctions to Head Nurse and Deputy in collaboration with the biomedical team. § Observe standard precautions and 3 Pillars of IPC “Hand Hygiene, Disinfection and Transmission Based precaution” accordingly. § Address concerns realted to IPC in collaboration with the IPC manager and supervisors and respond accordingly to the agreed action plan. § Ensure good teamwork with cleaners and strectcher barrier - observe schedule of their activities and make necessary report if needed to IPC supervisor. Stock Management (Medical Supplies and Biomedical Equipment) § Supervise and ensure proper and accurate inventory of medical stocks. o Ensure that Pharmacy Consumption Tally sheets are properly filled. o Regular order sheets should accurately filled based on the consumption and physical inventory. o Discuss with Head Nurse and provide justification for Extra Order items. o Ensure submission of regular order is done in timely manner. § Ensure availability of emergency items on a daily basis. § Ensure that medical stocks provided in the department are properly monitored in accordance with IPC and proper storage policy. § Ensure proper reception of stocks recevied from the Pharmacy and Logistic. § Collaborate with Pharmacy Supervisor and Storekeeper to review orders and medical supplies on a regular basis. § Identify discrepancies and address any related issues with Head Nurse or Deputy Head Nurse in case of absence. Human Resources § Implement rotation of the staff under his/her management based on plans propose by Head Nurse. § Ensure equal distribution of workload and working hours. § Ensure that all administrative work is properly done in timely manner and submit it to the Deputy Head Nurse. o Leaves are taken and follow the policy. o Sick leaves properly communicated with Staff Health doctor. o Unpaid leaves are communicated to DHN, PMR or HR Manager § Ensure that all medical incidents, errors/malpractice and misbehaviour/misconduct are reported to Head Nurse in timely manner – Management decision (Disciplinary actions or warnings) is respected in neutral manner. Data Collection / Documentation § Supervise proper documentation and ensure quality data collection. § Provide and report necessary data within the timeframe required by the department / facility. Meetings and Participation § Pro-actively attend meetings oraganized by Head Nurse and trainings by Deputy Head Nurse to ensure good quality care to the patients as required. § Engage in multi-disciplinary meetings and identify ways to collaborate with other departments to improve quality of care and patient outcomes. § Organise and facilitate monthly departmental meetings with all ICU nurses and nurse aides and ensure concerns are documented and addressed in a timely manner. Team Work and Communication § Collaborate with staff in other departments (ER, OT, IPDs, OPD and burn units) to ensure quality of care is provided to patients. § Clear and effective communication with patients, caretakers, families and colleagues § Role model and respectful behaviour towards patients, caretakers, families and colleagues. § Collaborate with Head Nurse and Deputy Head Nurse about use and correct implementation of protocols and guidelines. Flexibility § Carry out tasks and functions to work different Nursing position depending on the medical needs. § Possibility to assign in different departments, particularly when additional support is required.
Job requirements
Minimum Requirements and Competencies Education • Nursing diploma - Essential Experience • 2 years of previous experience - Essential • Having worked in MSF or other NGO’s and in developing countries - Desirable. Languages • Local language essential. (Pashto and Dari). • English language - Essential.
