Role summary
Industrial Electric Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems and equipment used in plant and manufacturing facilities. This role ensures machinery operates safely and efficiently by performing preventive maintenance, diagnosing electrical faults, reading electrical drawings, and complying with all applicable safety regulations. Industrial Electrical Technicians work with motors, control panels, PLCs, instrumentation, and other electrical components to minimize downtime and support reliable production operations.
Duties and responsibilities
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial electrical systems, equipment, and machinery. Perform preventive and predictive maintenance to minimize equipment downtime. Diagnose electrical faults using testing instruments such as multimeters, clamp meters, and insulation testers. Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals. Install, wire, and maintain motors, motor control centers (MCCs), control panels, and distribution systems. Troubleshoot and maintain PLCs, VFDs, sensors, instrumentation, and automated control systems. Replace or repair defective electrical components, wiring, switches, relays, breakers, and transformers. Test electrical systems after installation or repair to ensure proper operation and compliance with specifications. Follow all electrical codes, company policies, and health and safety regulations, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, and work orders. Collaborate with maintenance, production, and engineering teams to improve equipment reliability and efficiency. Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and emergency maintenance requests. Assist with equipment upgrades, modifications, and commissioning of new machinery. Identify opportunities to improve system performance, energy efficiency, and equipment reliability. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while ensuring proper use of tools and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Job requirements
Diploma, Associate Degree, or Technical Certificate in Electrical Technology, Industrial Electricity, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field. Minimum of 2–5 years of experience in industrial electrical maintenance or a similar role (depending on position level). Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems, power distribution, motor controls, and automation equipment. Experience troubleshooting and maintaining PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, sensors, and industrial control systems. Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals. Proficiency in using electrical testing and diagnostic equipment, including multimeters, insulation testers, and clamp meters. Knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance practices. Familiarity with applicable electrical codes, standards, and workplace safety regulations. Experience with lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and safe electrical work practices. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify and resolve electrical faults efficiently. Good communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work independently when required. Basic computer skills for completing maintenance records and work orders. Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, weekends, or on-call schedules as needed. Physically capable of lifting equipment, climbing ladders, working at heights, and working in confined spaces. Valid electrician license or certification, where required by local regulations, is preferred. Additional certifications in PLC programming, industrial automation, or electrical safety are considered an asset.
